The 2006 Caldecott Medal winner is  The Hello, Goodbye Window illustrated by Chris Raschka 

As the 2006 Caldecott Medal winner, Chris Raschka has achieved the highest honor a children's picture book illustrator can receive in the United States. According to the ALA Web site, Gratia Banta, the Caldecott Award Committee Chair, explained some of the appeal of Chris Raschka's illustrations for "The Hello, Goodbye Window," stating, "'With a few energetic lines, Raschka suggests a world filled with affection and humor. The richly textured tones of these expressive illustrations convey the emotional warmth of the intergenerational connection.'”
In addition to the Caldecott Medal winner, the Award Committe also selected four 2006 Caldecott Honor books.

The 2006 Newbery Medal winner is

As the 2006 Newbery Medal winner, Lynne Rae Perkins, the author of "Criss Cross," has achieved the highest honor an author of children's books can receive in the United States. Award Committee Chair Barbara Barstow stated, “'Writing in a wry, omniscient third-person narrative voice, Perkins deftly captures the tentativeness and incompleteness of adolescence'" (ALA Web site). In addition to the 2006 Newbery Medal winner, four books were selected as 2006 Newbery Honor Books.
