Back to School News

Welcome to a new school year!  It’s hard to believe that we are into the month of October already.  We’d like to thank everyone who was able to join us for our Back to School Night in August and our Open House last week.  We hope you enjoyed getting to meet your child’s teachers, touring the school, and learning more about the expectations for your child at his/her grade level.  Thank you also to everyone who has signed up to volunteer in our school building and attended the orientation session with Ms. Fleming.  If you would like to volunteer, it is not too late to sign up!

As many of you may have heard, Cecil Manor Elementary is now a Title I school.  Each year, the federal government gives money to states to fund Title I programs.  The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children receive a high quality education.  Title I resources are directed to schools with high poverty levels as determined by the percentage of students who receive free or reduced priced meals. Since this is our first year in the Title I program, we are a Targeted Assistance school.  This means that we receive money based on the percentage of students who receive free or reduced priced meals; however, the funds must be spent on students who are at risk in the areas of reading and/or math.

In addition to using funds to implement an after-school math program and to purchase necessary materials and supplies to support our Title I interventions, we have added the following positions to our staff:

  • Three Title I intervention teachers (K/1, 2/3, and 4/5) – These teachers work with the grade level teachers to assess students and provide small group intervention in the areas of reading and math.

  • Two Title I tutors – These teachers pull individual students for intervention in the areas of reading and math.

  • Family Involvement Advisor – She will work with families to help them learn how to help their children to be successful in school.

Thank you for helping us get off to a great start for this school year.  As always, our doors are open.  If you ever have any comments, questions, or concerns, please call, email, or stop in to see one of us.

Mid-Term Reports

Your child should have brought home the first marking period mid-term report on September 29th.  This report indicates the progress your child has made in school for the first half of the marking period.  If there is an area of concern, please contact your child’s teacher so that together you can help your child improve before the end of the first marking period.

2009 MSA Results
One progress report for our school is our Maryland School Assessment (MSA) data.  The chart below shows the percentage of students performing at each level on the 2009 Maryland School Assessment (MSA).  We made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) which means that all subgroups met the Annual Measurable Objective (AMO) or fell within the confidence band for the 2008-2009 school year.  For more detailed MSA data for our school, you can visit www.mdk12.org , click on MSA Data Analysis, and follow the prompts.

As the AMO increases each year, we need to continue to improve in order to achieve our goals.  Please see our link for a summary of our 2009-2010 Instructional Improvement Plan.  The information here highlights our goals and activities aimed at improving student performance in reading and math.  Also included are our safe school and family involvement goals.  If you have any questions regarding our Instructional Improvement Plan, please contact Mrs. Sopa or Ms. Fleming at school.
