Character Education Traits |
Cecil Manor incorporates a school wide character education program of instruction. Character education is as old as education itself. Down through history, education has had two great goals: to help people become smart and to help them become good. In these times of challenging social influences the need to help our children understand, develop, and adopt positive character traits has increased. Our program involves the introduction of nine character traits. Each trait will be incorporated on a monthly basis at school wide level and through classroom instruction. |
Individual Counseling |
Students can be referred to see me by parents, teachers, or the students themselves. My sessions usually last for about 20 minutes depending on the concern. Children come to see me for a wide range of problems spanning from worries about school to concerns about friends. The students know that I will keep what we talk about confidential, but I do encourage the students to share what we talk about with someone at home. I believe it is very difficult for a parent to help their child, if they do not know about the problem. |
| Small Group Counseling | During lunch time, I run small group classes for children who will benefit from talking to other children about a concern or problem they share in common. In our 30 minutes together, the children and I do different activities that hope to open the door for the student to talk about a worry. Sometimes students can be helped by just knowing they are not the only one who has a changing family or is struggling with their study skills. Parents can sign their child up for these groups by calling me or filling out a request form when I send them out during the year. In group classes, I also encourage the children to discuss with someone at home what they have learned in their time with me and the other students. Some of my groups are: "There's a Volcano in My Tummy" for anger control, "I Feel Great About Me" for self esteem, "Organizational Buddies" for study and organization skills, "Fabulous Friendships" for friendship skills, and "My Family's Changing" for children of divorce or separation. |
| Counselor's Corner | Kids’ Coats CampaignAs we brace for colder temperatures and the impending holiday season, the concern for others becomes ever present in our community. This year CCPS will again join in the 21st Annual Kids’ Coats Campaign. During the months of November and December our trait of the month will be caring. In conjunction with this trait, we will be having a food drive. If you would like to participate, please donate by following these guidelines: In the classroom during the month of November students will be receiving the final lessons in social situations: peer pressure in 5th grade, anger in 4th, bullying in 3rd, teasing in 2nd, self-discipline in 1st, caring in kindergarten and feelings in pre-kindergarten. The next unit, starting in mid November, will be on academics. During November, a grief group will be starting. If you feel your child will benefit from this I still have room for a few more students. Feel free to contact me regarding this or anything other concerns you may have.
