Fifth Grade News kid
Fifth Grade is beginning one of the all time favorite units in Language Arts!!! We will read and analyze poetry, including definition poems, haiku, diamante, concrete poems, acrostics, limericks, and some two part poems. We will learn about similie, metafore, alliteration, onamotopoeia, rhyme scheme, voice, and tone. Our culminating activity will be to write our own poems, and we are planning a poetry reading shortly before the winter holiday. We will send out invitations to families as soon as we firm up the date.
In math, we are working on displaying different types of data on appropriate graphs. Your children will be telling all about line and bar graphs, but also histograms, stem and leaf plots, and tree diagrams.
Fifth grade has a new unit in science this year. The students will be learning about animal and plant cells, as well as the proper use of a microscope.

In social studies, the students are beginning a unit about early explorers to North America. We are planning some fun activities to help them learn about our country in distant times.
We are helping second graders make and decorate gingerbread houses. This has been a tradition here at CMES for some time. Each student is responsible for bringing in one can of white icing (not the whipped kind), and a bag of candy. Students will make a house for themselves, in addition to helping second graders with theirs.
Have a safe and restful winter holiday, and we look forward to seeing you at our poetry reading!
