kidThird Grade News

Language Arts – We are reading our first theme – Off to Adventure!  We are reviewing several reading strategies – summarizing, making inferences, and monitoring and clarifying.  Each week your student will have a spelling list that will include Word Wall Words.  These words are cumulative – they can appear on any spelling test after that week.  It is very important that your student studies these words each week!  They will be highlighted in the back of their spelling journals. Each week, new words will be added to our list.

Math -- We are beginning Unit 1 of our new math series– Math Expressions by Houghton Mifflin. It is important that your student reviews addition and subtraction facts for this and upcoming units!

Science– We soon will be in our Structures of Life Unit.  We are learning about the various parts of a plant and its seeds.  Then we will actually plant our very own seed and watch it grow!  This is an awesome unit!  Be sure to ask your student about the parts of a plant and what they do to help a plant grow and survive.

Social Studies - We have just started studying about the growth of communities.  We will be focusing on learning about Cecil County – its waterways, landforms, and communities.  Students will also identify the many communities that they are a part of – Elkton, Cecil County, Maryland, etc.  Students will also learn how to use a grid system to identify locations.
