Charlestown Elementary Honors and Awards
Charlestown Elementary has been honored with several very distinguished awards over the last couple of years. The school, located in a suburban setting in Cecil County, Maryland, has the motto "Success For All Students No Matter What It Takes". The faculty and staff believe in working with the parents and the community to achieve high standards for all students.
In the 1999 - 2000 school year, the school was honored with a Distinguished Title One School Award. The school was able to send a group of faculty and staff to Indiana and was pleased to learn that the school was recognized as a National Distinguished Title One School. Title One schools receive money for having a high percentage of poverty in the community. Charlestown has about 35% of it's student population qualifying for free and reduced lunch programs. This award recognizes Title One Schools showing outstanding achievement.
In the 2000 - 2001 school year, the school was encouraged to apply for the Blue Ribbon Award. The faculty and staff again came together and worked as a team to write the 35 page proposal and submitted it to the state of Maryland. From the 200 Maryland school who submitted their proposals only ten schools were selected to receive the award. In November the school learned it had been selected as a Maryland State Blue Ribbon School. Charlestown Elementary was the only Title One School to be given this honor. The state then sends the state winners in for National consideration as a National Blue Ribbon School. The state
The school learned in March of 2001 that they had been selected for an on-site visit from a representative of the National Blue Ribbon Selection Committee. This visit involved a two day visit from a representative. She visited every classroom observing the children and asking questions of the staff and students about the lessons instructed. She also met with the school board members, school administration, faculty and staff, students representatives, parents and community leaders. During these meetings many questions were asked and answered to provide the visitor with the most detailed picture of Charlestown Elementary. The on-site visitor then returned to her home and worked on compiling all the information into a written report. The observer is forbidden to give any hints as to her opinion as to how the school did during the visit. Now the wait began. Then in May the school received the phone call announcing that Charlestown was one of 264 school to achieve National Blue Ribbon Status. They were one of 233 public schools to receive this honor throughout the entire country.

Mr. Eggleston, Mr. Petinga, and Mrs. Karen Crook will be representing Charlestown Elementary at the ceremonies. Pictures of the ceremony will be placed on this site as they become available.
