First Grade News
What's Going on in Class:
First Grade
Our students have been working hard to acquire new skills. They are gaining confidence and adapting to the routine responsibilities of first grade.
Thank you for your support with completing homework, signing the homework book, sending in supplies, informing the school in writing if a transportation change is necessary, and for sending in completed parent forms! J
Here are some of the topics we are currently working on:
Reading/Spelling: using fiction and non-fiction reading selections to make predictions/inferences, monitor/clarify, question, evaluate, and summarize, reading, using details and sentence structure to build comprehension; using graphic organizers to respond to text, making words with short vowel sounds; and learning sight words; self-correcting; retaining learned spelling patterns to use in daily work
Writing/Handwriting: using writing frames and sentence starters; writing to inform and writing for personal expression; using correct grammar, capitalization, and punctuation; using verbs; and uppercase and lowercase letter formation; and proofreading
Math: addition and subtraction facts to 18 and the strategies used to find answers; adding pennies and nickels; counting on using a number line
Social Studies: work at home to learn their addresses, phone numbers and important cell phone numbers and who to call in an emergency; U.S. Symbols; and Christopher Columbus
Science: living organisms, solids and liquids
Self-awareness: using good character traits; deciding whether something is a big or small problem, how it will affect him/her, and whether or not it needs to be discussed with an adult, ignored, or settled on his/her own
First Grade Supply List
1 box crayons ( 48 count, nothing larger - keep them in the orginal box- don't put in the pencil box)
2 folders with pockets (please write your child's name on them and label one "take-home" and one "clean paper" up in the top right hand corner)
1 backpack - standard size ( NO WHEELS or oversized backpacks - they do not fit in the lockers)
1 pencil box ( a small plastic one that latches shut ( 8 1/2" X 5" X 1 1/2", no zip pouches)
10 #2 pencils already sharpened ( send replacements when needed)
2 glue sticks
1 pair of scissors (small Fiskers with a sharp point work best)
1 rubber eraser ( pink works best)
2 black and white marble composition books (not colored ones)
1 box "Hefty" brand zip-locking baggies that have the pink zipper and labeling area on the bag (quart or gallon size)
1 largebox of tissues
1 oversized painting T-Shirt for art class (no buttons or ties please)
** Please use a black fine point Sharpie marker to label ALL of your child's school supplies listed above (except pencils and the eraser). Initials can be written on the lid of the glue sticks. Also, please write your child's name on the bottom of the tissues and baggies so we know he/she turned them in.
** The school will provide your child with a homework notebook.
** Also,please make sure your child has crayons, glue, scissors, and pencils at home to successfully complete homework. Also please check with your child's teacher regularly to see if they need to replenish supplies at school, ESPECIALLY PENCILS.
Please DO NOT SEND:
** Backpack with wheels, colored pencils, Trapper Keepers, 3 ring binders, rulers, mechanical pencils, hand-held pencil sharpeners, markers, highlighters, pencil grippers, or TOYS. These items will be sent back home
