Fifth Grade News
Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year. The students are off to a great start and are all becoming comfortable with the new routines and expectations. We are very excited to have two teachers in fifth grade, so that we get to experience switching classes. This month the curriculum and units focused on are:
Math - Unit 1: Multiplication and Division Word Problems. Please assist your child with fluency and mastery of basic facts by using flash cards and or timing their practice with multiplication and division.
Reading - Unit 1 Nature's Fury Students are reading a variety of stories that focus on the power of nature and how people cope with its challenges. The students will use their Post-It-Notes and Reading Strategy Cards to ensure they are implementing the strategies that good readers use.
Writing - Students will be writing a news article and a description using all the elements of the writing process including prewriting, drafting, editing, revising and publishing. We first read models and then implement the skills and processes introduced.
Science - Students will be working with the FOSS Kit Mixtures and Solutions using the steps in the Scientific Process to investigate materials performing hands-on experiments to determine the differences and make up of mixtures and solutions and states of matter.
Social Studies - The students are focusing on Native Americans and the cultures and social structures they established in North America before the times of settlers.
Spelling - we are implementing a new program Lee Jenkins "Permission Not To Forget" this will be further explained at open house.
