First Grade

January is jumping with opportunity for our junior geniuses!  The first graders will be putting all their writing skills to use as they begin writing paragraphs that exhibit correct beginning capitalization, sentence order, punctuation, and application of spelling skills.  They will be identifying the elements of stories – characters, setting, main idea, problem, solution, and sequence.  It would be helpful for you to use these terms when reading at home as well as when watching movies or television shows.  We will continue our Social Studies unit “Families Making Economic Choices” and our Science unit “Pebbles, Sand, and Silt”.  Math will focus upon comparing numbers, number stories, and mental arithmetic.  We encourage you to keep your child reading to maintain and strengthen skills.  The Pizza Hut “Book It” program has been very exciting for the children.  Please continue to encourage reading at home.  If you don’t have a public library card, please consider getting one.  Continue practicing the “word wall” vocabulary words.
