Empire State Building

The idea of the Empire State Building sprung in the 1920s when the race to see who could build the tallest skyscraper was on.  The creators were Smith and Raskob andStarrett and Ekken.  With some credit to James Bogardus for the ideas for the framework.  The Waldorf-Astoria hotel used to be where the Empire State Building is today.  It took 5 months to demolish the old hotel to make way for the Empire State Building.

Only 6 people died while working on the building.  They took many safety precautions.  There suppliers were Starett and Eken.  The outside of the building was completed in March of 1931.  It now stands 121 stories high in New York.

The Empire State Building was in competition with the Chrysler building.  They were trying to see who’s building would be the tallest.  By the time it was 3 months in it was the Empire State Building was 37 stories tall.  The Chrysler building was behind 3 stories.  But the race continued.  In the end the Empire State Building won by 50 feet
