The creators of the Statue of Liberty were, Gustave Eiffel, and Frederic Augustine Barthodi. Gustave Eiffel did the framework and Frederic built it. Both of these men were French. The Statue of Liberty was given to the U.S as a gift of friendship. The French intended it to be a lighthouse but we did not like that idea. Construction began in 1871. He wanted it to be done by 1876 (the 100th anniversary of the united states independence) but he couldn’t. So he gave the U.S the arm of the statue. He said, “Here is a small piece of what is coming to you”. That got us all excited. The arm was displayed at Madison Square Garden. They told us it would be 121 feet tall. The statue was completed in late 1886. It weighed over 100 tons. It stands at Fort Wood in New York Harbor. The statue was renovated in 1980, which cost $20,000,000. In return for the gift we gave France a 1/4 scale model of the statue, which was about 31 feet tall. |
