Thomas Jefferson

In 1743, Thomas Jefferson was born to Peter Jefferson and Jane Rudolph Jefferson. Peter was a pioneer farmer and surveyor. Still, the family was extremely poor.

During his reelection in 1804, problematic English warships sat in the New York Harbor. Hen, started searching ships for enemy goods, and kidnapping seamen to join the Royal Navy. So, President Jefferson told all United States’ ships to stay along our coastlines, which cause many vessels to lose money.

On March 4, 1801, Jefferson became the third president. He was the first president to live in the new capital, Washington D.C. That was after the fist White House was burnt down.

He died in 1826, and wrote this on his tombstone,"

              Here was buried

              Thomas Jefferson

Author of the Declaration of Independence

              Of the Statute of Virginia

              For Religious Freedom

And Father of the University of Virginia.”

He was also President, Vice-President, and Secretary of State.

Then, he bought The Louisiana Purchase from the French explorer, Napoleon, in 1803. This territory cost $15,000,000, but it just about doubles the size of the United States of America. Soon after he chose Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to go across, into the West.
