Care and Feeding
If you have several Chihuahuas, they should have a dry, sunny room, or rooms with an enclosed runway. Usually, your Chihuahuas can run and exercise together, unless a female is in season. If your female or females are in season, then it may cause fighting among the males that you have, because they will be trying to protect their "territory."
The females that are in season should always be separated from the other dogs. When females are not in season, all dogs can be in the same place and don't need their own runways, like the larger breeds need.
If you want to train them to go outside to relieve themselves, then you should start the training during warm weather. They can go outside in cold weather, but only in short intervals. If they are trained this way, then they will not have a problem of letting you know when they want to go out. Their beds should have a cotton blanket large enough to cover themselves, which they will do when they want to go to sleep. Straw may be used for larger breed dogs but you must eliminate it for Chihuahuas, because it can really injure their eyes.
Also, their bed must be placed where they can have access to them at will. When the female is pregnant, or while she is nursing, you should feed her raw ground beef. During mid-day, you should give them hard biscuits to gnaw on. If you have growing pups and they are losing their "baby" teeth, the biscuits help to loosen and remove the teeth. Also, canned meat can be mixed with dry food and it is a good diet supplement.
Their food should always be fed at room temperature no matter what, and it should never be given to them from right out of the refrigerator. The dog or dogs should have a clean bowl of water at all times. When a dog stops eating, it is a signal that something is wrong. If or when this happens, you should get him/her examined by your vet. Sometimes, you may have to force feed it with an eye dropper to give the animal strength, since a weak dog may have some type of disease. A Chihuahua is adaptable to any environment that is suited to a house pet.
He/she can not be expected to live in an unheated, outside kennel as a hunting breed can!!
PLEASE remember this if you ever buy any Chihuahuas!!
Doggie Biscuits!! (These are one of the kinds of biscuits that you can give to your dogs.)
