Temples were built to serve the gods. In the heart of each sanctuary, there was a statue of the god. Only the pharaoh and the highest priest were allowed to see the statue. The common people could leave written prayers, but could never enter. Women danced outside the courtyard to honor the gods.

The Egyptians believed that after you died, your soul was weighed on a scale with the feather of truth. If the soul balanced, you were allowed to pass through the gates to eternal life. If the feather of truth was lighter than the soul, you were not allowed to pass through and your soul was lost forever. This is the job Anubis had.

Ancient Egyptians believed that your Ka (your spirit) had to recognize your body to be able to have eternal life. If the Ka could not recognize the body, you could not have eternal life.
