Listed below are some of the jobs the Egyptians may have had:
FISHERMAN- Fish from the Nile have remained an important food source to the Egyptians. Fishermen made boats made of papyrus stalks that they used for fishing. Some tools they used to fish with were nets, hooks, and spears.
FARMER- In ancient times, the only fertile land was a small strip along the Nile. They used shadoofs (a hand operated water rising system used for irrigation). Some tools farmers used were hoes and oxen drawn plows. Some major crops they grew were grain, cotton, barley, and flax.
PRIEST- Egyptian astronomy was used for calendar purposes. They had very complex calenders which were only fully understood by the priests. This raised their position in society. Priests also served as local and national gods.
SCRIBES- Heiroglyphics were more complicated than the English language. Not many people could read or write. Scribes could read and write. They were very valuable to society as record keepers, letter writers, and historians. Writing was done with ink and a quill pen, reed pen, or brush.
QUARRY MEN- They were the people that made the blocks for pyramids, temples, palaces, fortresses, and bulidings intended to be permanent. They split the blocks with a thin piece of wood, then poured boiling water on the wood, and waited for the wood to swell to break the stone. Then they haulded the stone to the nearest point of the Nile. They shipped it down the Nile, drraged it as close to the buliding site as possible, and put it in place. Some quarries were used as hard labor for convicted criminals or prisoners of war.
