Brainstorm a list of keywords, subject headings or related topics to help you search for information on your topic. Add the keywords to your graphic organizers. You may need to read a encyclopedia article to help generate these keywords.

Keywords will help you when using . . .

• a table of contents
• indexes
• search strategies (Use keywords, subject headings or Boolean logic.)
• skimming (Quickly read the bold print, titles, subtitles, captions, etc.)
• scanning (Look for keywords in the text.)

Record information on the graphic organizers that will explain your identified keywords and/or answer your questions. The information you find will help you complete your writing assignments. This is an important step which will take time to complete.
