Anecdote - a brief story that captures the essence of the issue or situation. Cliche - n("It's been said, 'Better late than never,' but should that be acceptable for students turning in their school work?"): An overused or common phrase or saying. These leads often bore the reader.
Announcement - the writer tells the reader what he or she is going to say about the issue or situation and reflects an attitude. Definition - dictionary definition ("Webster's defines discrimination as..."): It's cliche.
Background - the writer gives a brief history of the issue or situation. Question - (Where does the cafeteria food get to our school?): It assumes that the reader cares about the answer.
News - the writer gives the reader the who, what, when, where, and why of the issue. Unfocused - ("Gun control in this country needs to be reworked. It isn't completely horrible, but it needs to be modified. Although having some freedoms with gun possession are required by the constitution.") : The reader is confused about the writer's stance on the issue right from the beginning.
Quotation - directly cites a statement that touches on or exemplifies the problem or issue.
