The Past Influences the Present

This is a social studies research project for sixth grade students. Essential Understanding : "The past influences the present." Students will . . . • select one of the following legacies. Agriculture / Farming Government, Laws & Democracy Architecture Medicine Clocks & Time Olympics Communication Transportation Education   • review a timeline of developments related to the legacy and select five (5) mini-topics for further research • use both print and digital resources to find new and easy to understand facts about the mini-topics. • will use a minimum of three (3) sources. One source MUST be a digital source. • select one of four final products to complete to illustrate their research and prove their new understanding of their topic. • present their findings to the class. Assessments include, but are not limited to : • informal teacher observation of time on-task • daily progress in locating relevant information • notes will be scored for completeness and quality • accurate bibliographic citations or sources used • quality of the final product (as defined by the scoring tool) • quality of the presentation Students are reminded to practice reading strategies (text features, indices, tables of contents, skimming & scanning, captions, etc.) to make their research easier. Additionally, students will practice using the "Find" feature when researching on websites.
