Minimum Effort yields Maximum Results
The value of simple machines lies in the statement that "minimum effort yields maximum results." Simple machines make a job ***much***easier. Mechanical advantage (MA) is a term used to describes how much a machine multiplies the force put into it. There is one man who seems to create inventions that do the EXACT opposite of simple machines. Rube Goldberg is known for his famous machines that take a simple task and make it complex. Visit this link and click on Artwork Gallery to see Goldberg's famous invention called the Simplified Pencil Sharpener.

Simple machines combine to make up complex machines. Visit this site and select one of the five complex machines. (Assignment #3) Using your knowledge of the work, power, and usefulness of the six basic simple machines, write a three paragraph essay. The essay should address these points:

  • name the simple machines found in the complex machine
  • how each simple machine works
  • how each simple machine works together with the other simple machines to accomplish the task efficiently
  • mechanical advantage (Mechanical advatage is the ratio of the force exerted by a machine compared to the force applied to the machine. For example, it takes less energy to ride a bike 5 miles than to walk 5 miles. Mechanical advantage of the simple machines in the bicycle make this possible.)
