Great Gizmo Contest (Summative Assessment)
Part One:
Students may earn a total of 30 points in this part. Students will earn 2 points for each sketch. Students will earn 3 points for each statement of mechanical advantage. (For example, 6 sketches = 12 points, 6 statements of mechanical advantage = 18 points. 12 + 18 = 30 maximum points)
Part Two:
Students may earn a total of 40 points in this part. Students will earn 5 points for including 3 simple machines in their new product. Students will earn 5 points if their new product is appropriate to the place for which it was designed. Students will earn 10 points if their new product serves a real function in their selected location. Students will create a detailed, labeled drawing of their new product. Their illustration will earn 15 points. Students will earn 5 points for creativity and neatness for their entry into the Great Gizmo Contest.
Part Three:
Students may earn a total of 30 points for this part of the contest. Students will earn 6 points for clear, detailed visuals incorporated into their oral presentations. Students will earn 9 points for a three minute oral presentation that shows clear evidence of preparation and practice. Students will earn 10 points when they include a clear explanation of the simple machines used in their new product, function of their new product at the location they chose, and explanation of the mechanical advantage of their new product. Students may earn 5 points for confident answers to spontaneous questions asked by the judges.
Points from all three parts of the contest will be combined to result in the final summative assessment. The grading scale below will be used for determining the final grade for the Great Gizmo Contest.
