2nd Grade News
Second Grade Team Mission Statement:
As a second grade team, we will guide our students’ learning by meeting the needs of all students through differentiated instruction in a safe learning environment. We will prepare all students for third grade and beyond. We will plan cooperatively by sharing ideas, being flexible and open- minded, and making adjustments as needed. In order to accomplish these goals, we will communicate, be open to suggestions, be prepared daily and provide support for each other and our students.
What’s Happening in Second Grade
Second grade has gotten off to a great start! Please remember, your child has spelling and math homework every Monday through Thursday. Reading Logs will go home October 3 and will be due every Wednesday after that. We require at least 75 minutes each week. Below are some of the things your child will be learning in language arts, math, social studies and science in the next few months.
Language Arts – we just finished reading some very silly stories and will begin reading some stories about nature. When your child is reading at home, ask them some questions about what they are reading such as who is the main character, where does the story take place, what the problem is and how the problem is solved. Encourage your child to discuss the stories we are reading in school.
Math – we are piloting a new math program called Investigations. The students are using many manipulatives such as cubes, number lines, geometric shapes, number cards, etc. They are also learning many new math games which help them with basic addition and subtraction. Please use addition and subtraction flash cards at home to help improve these math skills.
Social Studies – we have been learning about working cooperatively in groups and within the community. The students have learned that being respectful and responsible is important in all aspects of their lives. We have also learned the importance of rules, not only in school but at home and in the community.
Science – our insect unit will begin in October. This unit is very hands-on and teaches the students not only about the life cycle of insects but also about treating every living thing with care. Please ask your child about the insects we are working with in class.
