Lois Lowry had a father who was in the military, who worked as an army dentist. When she attended college during her sophomore year, she married a man who was enlisted in the military at the age of nine-teen. She lived as most military families did, moving from place to place, having 4 children along the way, and eventually settling down in Cambridge, Massachusetts after a divorce. One of her children died due to enlistment in the military. She eventually began writing books after the divorce.
