Summary:

Jonas is a normal kid where he lives, well, he was a normal kid. At the ceremony of twelve, Jonas is given one of the most honorable jobs that someone can receive in his society, the receiver. For the first time after the ceremony, he felt something he had never felt before, he felt isolated and apart from everyone else. He then begins to receive training from the old receiver, which is known now as the giver to Jonas. He eventually finds out that the last receiver-in-training had applied for release shortly after undertaking the job. What could she have seen to scar her so deeply as to apply for release?
