Mr. Myers, the band teacher of Elkton Middle, was asked by me to do an interview. To my luck, he full heartedly agreed. On the 28th of February, I learned some interesting things about the band teacher that I’ve never known before.

“I was born in Summersville, West Virginia.” He said. I asked him where he went to college, he stated, “West Virginia University.” I wasn’t shocked at this fact, because he seems very knowing when it comes to instruments and WVU has an extraordinary band. I also asked why he wanted to become a teacher in the first place. He paused for a while than said, “Would you like the short version, or the long one.” I laughed and said, “Short version.”

“I just love music, but I wanted to teach others how to enjoy and love music too.” He said happily. I smiled at his kind answer.

“What are your interests and hobbies outside of school?” I asked. He thought for a little bit, than decided which hobbies to choose.

“I love to run a lot. I also enjoy fly-fishing, playing the Saxophone for weddings, and other gigs like that.” I also asked what his favorite quote was. He pondered this question for a second than said, “There are a lot of quotes that I like, but I’ll just choose the most interesting one: I’m just here for the ride around the sun.”

I asked him who as the most influential person in his life, along with who was his mentor or the person who encouraged him the most. Mr. Myers said that his father and College professor were the two people in his life that made the most difference. He also stated that without them, his life wouldn’t be as wonderful as it is now.

Mr. Myers has been a teacher for nearly 4 years now. I decided to ask him about any advice for people who would want to become one. He immediately said, “Don’t do it!” He then laughed, “Just kidding. Well I think that all students-or adults, that want to become a teacher need to have a lot of patience.”While on the topic of jobs, I asked him what his career choice would be if he weren’t a teacher. “Aerospace engineering was always a passion of mine,” He said, “but during high-school I realized that I wasn’t smart enough.”

I also questioned Mr. Myers some fun questions.

Mr. Myers stated that he has a lot of “pet peeves”. He hates shallow people, laziness, and he despises people with no sense of humor with a burning passion. I also asked him whether or not there was anything that the students didn’t know about him that he thought they would be interested in. Mr. Myers simply said one word: “No.”

I asked him what his favorite word was. “Inconceivable,” was one of them. But then he started to quote the entire Princess Bride movie. I had to quickly persuade him to stop. Mr. Myers claimed that he loves to hear an unresolved dominant 7th suspension. We both laughed. Mr. Myers said that he hates the sound of an oboe. He claimed that the ‘instrument’ is a worse than a fork scraping a plate. I thought that it must be pretty bad than, since that was my least favorite sound.

Mr. Myers said that most students would probably like his unique (and incredibly twisted) sense of humor.

My interview with him has been a wonderful experience for both me, and hopefully for him. Mr. Myers is a great addition to the Elkton Middle School staff. Without him, our band program would not be where it is today. I am sure that the students here are grateful for his work and effort, and hope that he stays with us for a long time.

Mr. Myers and his symphonic band received a 1 at the band festival on May 18, 2007. This shows what a hard working band teacher he is! Congratulations Mr. Myers and the EMS Symphonic band.
