October 2007
A Message from Ms. Clark…
Thank you for your support during the month of September. Our arrival and dismissal procedures are in place and are going quite well. It has been wonderful to welcome students; they have been eager to come to school and have been pleasant when greeted. Getting to know them has been and will continue to be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. We welcomed many visitors to our building during each of our “Back to School” events and during our first PTO meeting. Members of the PTO were excited to preview supplementary math materials for grades 2 through 5 that support our math instructional program. The decision was made to purchase the materials. You will see them coming home shortly as supports for students and parents to use during homework time. Once you see them coming home please send us a note about your comfort with them or bring your comments to our October PTO meeting.
We need to share several general items with you at this time:
In order to provide a healthy lunch program and to oversee a waste-free eating environment we need to share with you information pertaining to students purchasing snacks. Students will have an opportunity to purchase 2 items only depending upon your plan as a family. They may purchase an additional snack-type drink and a snack or two snacks. We have seen too many students reach for snacks prior to eating their main entrée or sandwich and we have seen too many healthy foods and/or extra snacks heading into the trash can. We are trying to help children may good choices and are asking you to help us out with this one. We would appreciate any suggestions from you.
We continue to welcome water bottles, filled with water only that students choose to bring each day. However, once the water bottle is emptied students will need to visit the coolers for a drink as necessary instead of refilling their water bottle
SPECIAL THANK YOU TO:
*Cherry Hill United Methodist Sisters (for their kind donation to support our students’ needs and to support their reading materials in the media center.)
*Cherry Hill Football Club (for their kind donation to support our school.)
*Kenmore PTO (for their support of our math supplementary materials and staback to school gifts of appreciation.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CHARACTER LEADERS FOR THE FIRST MARKING TERM!

Thought for the month…

You can turn anything around by taking a positive approach and
being willing to compromise and share.”

Kenmore’s Monthly Character Trait:
Students at Kenmore are taught a new character trait each month. Teaching kids how to be better citizens is a part of our mission as educators in Cecil County. Through our character education program we hope to help our children become better citizens by teaching them how to be quality students and peers. This program is designed to teach students about traits such as respect, responsibility, and cooperation. To emphasize the importance of these traits teachers will be asked to select two students, one boy and one girl, for each month and each different character trait. The selected students are students who have shown outstanding character in their class for that month. Teaching our children about these traits and showing them how to use them will help our students be more productive and improve our already friendly environment here at Kenmore. The character traits for each month and examples of how to display these traits are listed online on our Kenmore Elementary web page.
The Character Trait for this month is…
OCTOBER
Responsibility
- following directions and rules
- cleaning up after yourself
- taking care of your possessions
- being considerate of other people's feelings
- completing all your work, including homework
News from the Third Grade
The third grade has been studying rocks in Science and will soon start on minerals. This unit will culminate with a class trip to Indian Echo Caverns on October 23. We will be looking for chaperones to accompany us. Look for the trip information and permission slips soon. In Social Studies we are learning about Cecil County.
We have completed the first theme in Reading, and are now on Theme 2, Celebrating Traditions. Does your family have some interesting traditions? Your child will get a chance to share them. We are in the process of finishing and sharing the personal narratives we wrote for Theme 1's writing project.
Unit 2 in Math, Addition and Subtraction, is what we are studying now. The PTO is buying us workbooks with homework papers that match our lessons and have explanations on how to do the lesson! We are looking forward to getting those and are pretty certain you will be, too!
Please remember to sign your child's homework assignment book each night. Signed Reading Logs are due on Monday, as are the signed Friday Folders. We are continuing our Ronald McDonald project of collecting can tabs, and our Kenmore project of collecting Box Tops for Education.
News from the Art Room-Mrs. Manning
The art room is off to a great start with your students working very hard to increase their skills and have fun at the same time. Third, fourth and fifth grade spent some time the first day to create our new Art Room Mission Statement.
"Our mission in the art room is to learn how to make better art by getting ideas and improving our art skills. We will also have fun together as a community. We will do this by paying attention and listening, focusing and taking our time and showing respect."
So far we are making progress. Most of our first work with the older grades has been pencil and paper and now we are starting projects with watercolor. The primary grades have explored bugs, digging in the dirt and second grade is getting ready to begin an exciting robot project.
Keep us in mind as you do your fall cleaning and find those materials you thought you might use but now know you never will! We are in need of old adult t-shirts for paint smocks, yarn, fabric, buttons, ribbon, wallpaper and we all know how our students love "glitzy and shiny" anything.
Thanks in advance for all you do for the art program at Kenmore. We will do our best to keep the halls looking great.
Art News from Ms. Heckman
Your student attends my class if they have their art special on Tuesday. This year, all grade levels will participate in a wide variety of art assignments, completed in different media. All of my students will be able to create one clay object at some point this year.
Currently we are working on:
K: Students have been working on the identification of shapes and colors. We are working with patterns and will soon create a surprise animal!
1st: Students have been working on drawing, cutting, and identifying shapes. Currently, we are creating a self-portrait.
2nd: Students have been learning about various color groups including warm, cool and neutral. Look for assignments coming home in these different color groups.
3rd: Students have created a handmade scratchboard as a new media for “drawing.” Students will scratch their drawings into the black surface, allowing bright colors to appear from underneath.
4th: Students have drawn self-portraits that include a wide variety of lines representing textures.
5th: Students have created original sketchbooks and are now planning a long-term sculpture of a shoe.
Physical Education
Integrated Arts
Welcome back! We have been VERY active in PE/IA over the past couple of weeks! Third through fifth graders just wrapped up a unit on Cooperation/Team Building. Kindergarten through second graders have been working on Spatial Awareness, locomotor movements, and spent a bit of time in Oscar’s Garbage Can getting their heart rates up.
In October, 3rd through 5th will be working on soccer skills and Fitnessgram Fitness Testing while K-2 will be working on balance concepts, pathways, and the Pacer Test.
We would also like to welcome Mr. Shelby to our classes. He is a student teacher from the University of Delaware. He will be with us until October 12th.
Music News
While fall has just arrived, the music department of Kenmore Elementary School is working hard with 4th and 5th grade students in preparation for our annual Winter Concert. This year's Winter Concert will take place on MONDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2007 @ 7:00 p.m. in the KES Cafteria. The Winter Concert will feature Ms. Butera and the KES Cubs Band and Mr. Moon and the KES Cubs Chorus!
Mr. Moon's third grade general music classes are getting ready to play the recorders. The order forms have been sent home and the order will be placed on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5th for all students purchasing a recorder through KES! Recorders are $4. If you already have a recorder you do NOT need to purchase another recorder but ALL students are REQUIRED to have access to a recorder to play each week in music class. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Moon at wmoon@ccps.org or Mrs. Vogeley at bvogeley@ccps.org.
The music teachers of Cecil County will be sponsoring a benefit concert on Friday, November 2nd at Newark Baptist Church in Elkton, MD to support Meeting Ground Inc., a local Homeless Shelter. Mr. Moon is serving as one of the co-chairpersons in this event that will feature several music teachers from ALL around the county performing together for a wonderful cause in a really FUN night of music. Mr. Moon will ALSO be participating in the event as a performer. If you would like more information on the event, please contact him!
Lastly, we wish general music teacher Mrs. Brandi Vogeley good luck as she goes out on maternity leave to welcome her first child into her family. She will be returning later this year and she will be missed through her absence.
