Welcome to Second Grade! It was wonderful to meet so many students and parents on Classroom Visitation Day. We are all so excited to have a new year of learning starting with a great new group of students.

Language Arts
 Silly Stories is the concept of Theme 1. We will read the stories Dragon Gets By, Julius, and Mrs. Brown went to Town. We will be focusing on short and long vowel sounds, reading sight words automatically, homophones, synonyms, multiple meaning words,  Fantasy and Realism, cause and effect, and suffixes.
Nature Walk is the concept of Theme 2. We will read  Exploring Parks with Ranger Dockett, Around the Pond, and Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night.                We will be focusing on long vowels, double final consonants, compound words, compare and contrast, fact and opinion, print features, Evaluate strategy, distinguishing between fiction and nonfiction text.
Mathematics
            Our first math module is Understanding Addition and Subtraction.  We will solve story problems, complete Math Mountains, find number partners, follow a rule to complete a table, solve an equation, create numbers, and complete a pattern as well as explain it in words to name a few skills. Please be on the lookout for math worksheets and flashcards Monday through Thursday for homework this year.

            Our second math unit is Measurement and Shapes. Some of the skills we will be working will be drawing and labeling quadrilaterals, using a ruler for inch and centimeter measurements, comparing shapes and finding the perimeter of shapes. If you do not have a ruler with both centimeter and inch sides at home it is highly recommended to purchase one for homework. 
Science
We will be learning about lifecycles and characteristics of insects in science this marking period. Their environments will also be explored. Soon our rooms will be welcoming insects for observation. 
Social Studies
Our first unit focuses on Citizenship. We will discuss how rules and laws protect its citizens. We will explore how different groups of people work together to solve problems and work towards a common goal. Patriotism will also be studied through symbols, people, and songs.
