It was wonderful to have so many parents visit during National Education Week. Hopefully, it gave you a snapshot into your child’s day. We also welcome Mrs. Grey to second grade while Mrs. Klaus is out on maternity leave.

Language Arts
 Amazing Animals is the concept of Theme 4. We will read the stories Officer Buckle and Gloria, Ant, and The Great Ball Game. We will be focusing on cause and effect, nouns, final consonant blends, drawing conclusions, and nouns. In writing our project will be writing an animal research report.
Theme 5 is called Family Time. The stories we will be reading are Brothers and Sisters, Jalapeno Bagel, Carousel, and Thunder Cake. Concepts we will work with are making generalizations, contractions, and making judgments. Our writing project will be writing a personal narrative.

Mathematics
       Unit 7 is Tables and Graphs. We will collect, interpret, organize, and display data. We will work with pictographs, tally charts, bar graphs, circle graphs, and double bar graphs. We will use a grid to identify ordered pairs. We will solve double digit addition and subtraction equations as well as write word problems.
       Our math Unit 8 is Diagonals and Midpoints. Some of the skills we will be working with are drawing diagonals and identifying the shapes created, connecting midpoints, drawing line segments, creating a shape with specific lengths, as well as using coins to show a specified amount. Shapes will be explored by identifying and explaining whether they are a square, rectangle, parallelogram, and/or quadrilateral.
       Unit 9 focuses on Subtracting 2-Digit Numbers. We will demonstrate the skill of 2-digit subtraction by working with money amounts, creating word problems, solving word problems, drawing Math Mountains, using table data, and determining the correct change from a purchase. We will also read a thermometer, label a thermometer, estimate to the nearest ten, count coins, and show coin amounts different ways.

Science
We will continue to learn about Air and Weather. We will understand these concepts by exploring and observing properties of air and they sky. Activities in this unit will include the concepts, but are not limited to, wind, clouds, seasons, and the water cycle.
Our next Health Unit is Nutrition. We will explore the food groups by learning the basics of good nutrition along with the importance of physical activity. We will also learn the how food from each food group helps our body to stay healthy.

Social Studies
We will continue to work in our third unit, which focuses on Our Changing World. We will explore how individuals as well as societies change over time. We will also understand that transportation and communication can connect people and places.  
Our fourth unit focuses on Economics.  We will identify how neighbors depend on each other to live and work together in their community. Natural, capital, and human resources will be explored as a concept focus.
