Grade 4 News

Welcome back!  We hope that you had an exciting, and relaxing summer.  We are all very excited about meeting all of the new fourth grade students and can’t wait to welcome all of you to the fourth grade!  We look forward to a successful year.

We will begin the year in language arts by studying a theme about journeys.  We will discuss how journeys are different from trips, and how journeys can lead to learning about ourselves.  The stories in this theme are all related to the concepts of self-awareness, exploration, courage, and perseverance.  Please encourage your child to read each night.   Your involvement with your child’s reading is appreciated.

Math will begin with a short unit on fluency of basic facts.  We will then be moving onto unit 1, solving multiplication and division word problems.  We will discuss how multiplication and division are related.   The students will be learning different methods, such as arrays, fast arrays, equal share drawings, picture representations, and comparison bars to solve multiplication and division problems.

To start the year in social studies, we will be studying the North American Regions.  We will be learning cardinal directions, the different types of maps, and where the different continents in the world are located.

We will begin science with a unit on magnetism and electricity.  We will discover magnetism and what types of objects are attracted to magnets.  The students will also study how electric switches work, the different types of circuits, and how magnets work together with electricity.
