Description/Overview: Reading and writing are two essential skills that contribute to an individual’s ability to succeed in our society. Language Arts will examine the skills necessary to be an effective reader, a critical thinker, and a powerful writer. The curriculum for this course is integrated: reading and writing will not be taught in isolation, but will instead be taught together to see the connections that can easily be made between the two topics.

Communication: I will work to make sure that your child has the greatest potential to learn. However, my attempts will be unsuccessful if I do not have your support and cooperation. Please feel free to contact me regarding problems or questions at school from 7:30AM to 3:05PM. You may also contact me via e-mail kreed@ccps.org. In addition, you may log on to http://www.ccps.org/teachers/kreed/Site/Welcome.html for information about assignments and materials covered in class. You may also access grades via Grades to Go (available at www.ccps.org).

Texts:	Language Network Language Network (workbook) The Language of Literature

Materials: The materials listed below are needed for class and should be brought daily. Repeated failure to bring required materials will result in a detention.
•	1 1/2” binder
•	1 pack of notebook paper
•	1 Marble Composition book-NO SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS
•	Pens & Pencils (blue/black ink only)
•	Box of tissues (for the classroom)
Novel (for independent reading)

Units of Study: Throughout the course of this year, we will be examining the following units: Power: Conflict or Cooperation, Biography, Mystery, Mythology, The Forms of Literature, and a research unit on the Holocaust. Writing, grammar, spelling and vocabulary will be integrated on a regular basis.

Classroom Rules: Consequences:
•	Arrive on time with all materials Verbal Warning
•	Immediately begin warm-up Verbal Warning
•	Raise your hand to speak, or to get up out of seat After School detention
•	Be respectful of your classmates and school property. Phone Call Home
•	No eating in classroom! (GUM Included!) Office Referral

Class Preparation: Each student will receive a class preparation grade for each Reading and English. Each student will start out the marking period with 100 points. Each time that they come to class unprepared, they will lose 5 points for each item forgotten (each textbook counts as 2 separate items-so be careful!). Also, each time an item is forgotten, the student needs to write down that particular date on the “class preparation chart”. Once a student has three dates written down, they will receive a 1/2 HOUR AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION. Once three detentions have been assigned, a referral will be issued.
Grading Policies: Grades are classified into two categories: summative and formative. Formative measures are “brief checks on learning” and Summative measures are “Comprehensive assessments used to document mastery of content outcomes.” The two types of assignments are weighted differently. Summative assignments are worth 60% and Formative assignments are worth 40%. Below is a list of sample assignments and their classifications.

The above information is available in detail in Cecil County Public Schools Policy IKAF, “Middle School Grading and Reporting.”

Homework:  Homework assignments are used to encourage the review of materials or the development of skills taught in class.  Homework plays a significant role in the success of the student.  Homework assignments will be announced during class---the assignments will also be posted on the chalkboard and on the class website.  Students will also record their homework in their planner.  Homework will be collected the day after it is assigned unless otherwise noted.

Independent Reading Assignment:  Students will be required to read at least one novel outside of class instruction during the marking period.  Once a marking period, students will present to the class a project based on their novel, a list will be provided to students and requirements will be explained in greater detail in class.

Late Assignments: There is no excuse for not turning work in on time! Any assignment that is not turned in on time will automatically receive a grade of 70%.  No additional copies of the assignment will be provided. You may check the class website for additional papers. http://www.ccps.org/teachers/kreed/Site/Welcome.html Periodically there will be documents available for downloading. Late assignments from the first half of the marking period will be accepted until interim time.  Those from the second half will be accepted until 5 days before the marking period ends.

Make-Up Work Policy: Any assignments due the day the student was absent are due the day the student returns to school or the work will be graded according the late assignment policy. Students are responsible for rescheduling missed tests, quizzes and in class projects.  A make-up date MUST be scheduled with the teacher on the day the student returns.  Failure to schedule a date to make-up these items will result in an F.  Students will need to consult the absent log to see what they missed and copy any notes from a classmate.  A folder will be provided that will include any worksheets that were missed due to an absence.   If your absence has been given a lawful excuse, you will have one day to make up the assignment.  If you are absent for multiple consecutive days and it has been given a lawful excuse, then the student will have one day for every day absent to complete the missed work, unless other arrangements have been made.  Unlawful absences will be graded according to the Cecil County Public Schools Grading Policy for Unlawful Absences.  See  www.ccps.org for details.
If a student misses class due to band, chorus, or any other school club, they are still responsible for any and all work done that day in class.  The student will need to come to class first, turn in any assignments that are due that day, and be aware of any assignments that are due the following day.

Correcting Assignments: If an assignment was turned in on time and it receives a grade of 69% or lower, it can be corrected on a blank sheet of paper, and resubmitted within 5 days of receiving the graded assignment.  The two grades will then be averaged together.  Notebook Evaluations, Writing Prompts, Late Work, and Projects cannot be corrected.

Unacceptable Assignments: Students MUST take pride in their work.  Assignments that are incomplete, illegible, ripped, wrinkled, scribbled on, or are not completed in pencil, blue or black ink will NOT be graded.   They will be returned to the student and be counted as a late assignment when resubmitted.

Extra Credit: Extra credit will not be given for any reason as stated in the CCPS Grading Policy.

Extra Help:  I am happy to assist students with any questions they have.  Feel free to ask—I’m here to help! Students may
arrange to meet with me after school on most days until 3:30.  A note from parents giving permission is required before the
student may stay after.  Students need first to ask if the teacher is available 24 hours PROIR to staying.

Let’s Have a Great Year!
