What Happened This Week?
Girls in STEM: Around 20 students from EMS attended different sessions taught by scientists. Our students learned about rockets, identifying hair samples with microscopes, slime polymers, building environmentally friendly water bottles, and so much more! The students had a great time learning from scientists and felt inspired to become future leaders in STEM! We can’t wait for Girls in STEM next year!
The girls soccer team had their first home game on Monday against a very good Perryville team. There were two lead changes early, but the half ended at a draw with both squads showing great effort. Although Elkton succumbed to a strong second half performance from Perryville, our team never gave up and fought until the whistle blew. All the athletes were supportive of one another and when resting on the sideline were still actively cheering on their teammates. We look forward to seeing our fans at our next home game on October 15th. Boys play at 3:30, Girls at 4:45.
The strategy gaming club held their first meeting this Wednesday in the Media Center. We played chess, Yatzee, and Dominion. New members are welcome to bring in signed permission slips. The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 10, until 4:30, in the Media Center.
This week 7th grade science students created food webs! The students were able to see how many different organisms are interconnected in an ecosystem.
All 8th-grade Maverick students in Mrs. Bowman and Ms. Falker's ELA classes should have finished their Young Adult novels this week. The final project is due on Mon, Oct 8. Please email Mrs. Bowman at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
POLO SHIRT ORDERS: All students in Band & Chorus will need a polo shirt for the concerts. Additional EMS apparel is also available through this store as a fundraiser for the department. Orders can be made online at https://emsmusic.itemorder.

The EMS Jazz Band will begin on October 11th after school. All instruments are welcome to learn to play in the jazz style. Students must be picked up at 4:00pm. We are also looking for additional musicians to help with the piano, bass, & guitar parts. If you have a family member who can support these roles at the concert, please contact Mrs. Vogeley email@example.com.

Students are looking forward to the first dance of the year. On Thursday, October 25, we will be hosting a Halloween dance. Tickets will be sold during lunch for $3. Students are welcome to dress up in costumes for the dance only. Please be mindful of school
appropriateness. NO weapons or full masks. There will be a costume contest and prizes.
The AVID trip to the University of Maryland on Saturday, October 27 has been cancelled due to transportation issues. Please stay tuned for information on additional trips and opportunities this year!
Student Emergency Cards: Please remember to complete and return your child’s emergency information card. This form is used as emergency contact information for your child. If phone numbers, addresses, or emergency contact names change, please notify the office so we are able to update your child’s emergency information. If at any point during the year someone other than a parent or guardian will be picking up your child, please send in a note or call the office.
Fall Fest Parent Volunteers Needed: EMS Fall Fest will be held on Thursday, October 18 from 5-7 pm. We are looking for volunteers to assist with the following:
Preparing ticket packs ahead of time
