What Happened This Week?
We held our Honors Breakfasts this week to celebrate the students who earned perfect attendance, Honor Roll, Distinguished Honor Roll or were named Students of the Month for the second marking period. We’re very proud of our students’ accomplishments! As a reminder, students who earn one of the above distinctions for the first three marking periods will be invited to attend a Blue Rocks baseball game this Spring.
Members of the Student Round Table met with representatives from the Wilmington Area Planning Council, who are working with the Town of Elkton to establish the Elkton Pedestrian Plan, aimed at making Elkton a safer and more inviting place to walk and bike. Students learned about many factors that are considered when planning for safe pedestrian movement, including size and condition of sidewalks, buffers between roads and walkways, well-marked crosswalks, lighting and many others. Students then provided feedback to members of the planning committee that included areas in Elkton they do not feel safe to walk, places they would like to walk to but can’t, and they shared their suggestions for improving walking in Elkton. Some of their feedback will be included in the formal plan submitted to the Town of Elkton!
Elkton High School’s Chamber Choir visited our eighth grade choir students on Wednesday. The Chamber Choir performed for our students, and then shared with them some opportunities available to them in high school. Our students have a better understanding of the expectations and commitment required to participate in choir in high school and left class inspired to do their best!
PBIS Zone Day was held on Friday! Students who received one or zero Office Disciplinary Referrals for the second marking period were invited to the gym during their Fine Arts and Physical Education periods to have some fun their classmates! Some students also participated in working together to make an Elk mural for each grade level hallway. Teachers joined in on the fun, too!

The Multicultural Club will have a meeting on Thursday, February 22 after school until 4:30. We will discuss and celebrate Black History Month with discussions and foods. All students are invited. Permission slips are located outside Room 117 and are due by Tuesday, February 20. We would also like to extend an invitation to Cecil College Elkton Station on Saturday, February 24 from 12-2pm for an event entitled Black Expressions Throughout the Generations. Please see the attached flyer for more information. MSU revised (color version).pdf
Yearbook News: Yearbooks are on sale now through March 1, 2018. Order forms are available in the main office, or yearbooks can be ordered online. To order online, go to www.strawbridge.net and enter code 111469. If any 8th grade student would like their baby picture in the yearbook, they should bring them in to Mrs. Shortall in Room 101 by February 23, 2018. All baby pictures will be returned by mid-March.
Elkton High School is hosting Eighth Grade Parent Night on Wednesday, February 28 at 6pm. This is an excellent time to hear about all that high school has to offer our students. You will learn about course offering and credit requirements, special programs, extracurricular activities, and much more. Eighth grade students should attend as well. Be on the lookout for more information about this important event for all eighth grade students and their families.
Middle School Movers will have their last regular game on Tuesday, February 20 at 3:30 pm. Students who are not in Movers or cheerleaders may only attend with a parent or guardian. While we wish we could allow all students to stay and cheer on their classmates, it is just not possible with the limited space for seating in the gym. The seats provided are for parents and families of players and cheerleaders. We appreciate your understanding.
The last day of school for students is now Monday, June 11, 2018. This adjustment was made after the inclement weather day last week.
A special screening of “Dream Big,” a movie that celebrates the innovation and creativity of engineers, along with a question/answer session with engineers from Orbital ATK and AIAA DE and family engineering activities, is being held, free of charge, at the Elkton Library on Friday, February 23 at 6:30 pm. Call the library or visit their website at www.cecil.ebranch.info/ to register or for more information.
The Elkton Middle School Pantry is in need of hygiene items. If you have any of the following items available to donate, please consider dropping off items to the Main Office: soap, body wash, deodorant (mens’ and womens’), toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks (mens’ and womens’), shampoo/conditioner, lotion and feminine hygiene products.
Reminders and Updates
As part of our comprehensive plan for school safety, we conduct several drills of different types throughout the school year. We had intended to have a drill on Thursday, but given the events of Wednesday at a high school in Florida, we did not want to worry or alarm students. However, we will need to complete a drill in the coming days. We will remind students of our expectations and do what we can to allay any fears. Parents can help by talking to their children about the importance of such drills and encourage their full cooperation with staff and with one another.
As you are all very well aware, we are fighting several illnesses and “bugs” this season. If your child is experiencing flu-like symptoms, please keep them at home. If your child has tested positive for the flu, please report that information to the school nurse, as the Cecil County Health Department is tracking reported cases. Thank you for your cooperation, and remember to wash your hands!
