Substitute Information Page
Prospective Substitutes:
The Board of Education appreciates your interest in serving as a substitute in the Cecil County Public Schools. As a substitute, you will be replacing a permanent employee on a daily, on-call basis.
*Please note: Substitutes who worked at least four days during the prior school year will remain active on our substitute list and are not subject to the requirements listed below.
To become any type of substitute for CCPS:
- You must be at least 18 years of age.
- You must be at least 21 years of age to be a substitute in a high school.
- Substitute Teachers/Paraprofessionals must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Substitute Teachers/Paraprofessionals must complete our online substitute training course through App-Garden University. The course cost is $39.
- Substitute Nurses must be a Certified Registered Nurse.
- You must pass a criminal background investigation.
- You must pay the fingerprint fee by check or money order.

Substitute Training Information:
CCPS has recently implemented an online substitute training course. The virtual training is offered by the App-Garden University. The course must be completed and is available online for $39.
Candidates selected to take the online substitute training course will be contacted via email with information on how to register for the course. Shortly after you have completed the training you will receive an email with information on how to schedule a processing appointment.
Please understand that completion of the course does not guarantee your ability to become a substitute. You must also pass a required criminal background check which will be completed at your scheduled processing appointment. The cost of the background check is $50.
