Health Services
Cecil County Public Schools believes that healthy children are successful learners. School nurses bridge the gap between health, wellness, and learning by using evidence-based practice to provide a comprehensive health services program designed to identify and reduce students’ health related barriers to learning. The school nurse is a vital member of the school team that leads change to advance health and collaborates with school staff members, parents and community members to keep students safe at school and healthy to learn.
Under the direction of Stephanie Norman, Coordinator of Health Services, Cecil County Public Schools addresses the health issues of students and provides for the safety of students and staff as well as addresses the need for the integration of health solutions into the education setting. All schools are staffed with a Registered Nurse who is called upon to assess student health, develop and execute plans for care management, act as first responders, and engage in public health functions such as disease surveillance, immunization compliance, and health promotion.
School nurses support student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting. School nurses address the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and support their achievement in the learning process by:
- Providing emergency first aid and care for students and staff
- Administering physician prescribed medication and services
- Ensuring compliance with federal and state health mandates
- Conducting student health appraisals and mandated hearing and vision screenings
- Monitoring chronic health conditions
- Developing and implementing student health care plans
- Advising school teams on health issues
- Providing health education
- Assisting with the management of students with special health needs.
