Charlestown is located on the North East River and was founded in 1742. It was laid out to be what might have been the city of Baltimore. Public buildings including a court house and market house were planned. A public wharf and shipyard were constructed. Much grain and flour were shipped from Charlestown. Fairs were held in April and May for the selling of many products. Festivals and dances were held at this time as well. One of the first settlements in Cecil County was made in Carpenter’s Point. After Baltimore became important, Charlestown lost much of its prestige and became a fishing town. Later, the shores became a place for summer vacations and family picnics. Today boating is by far the main attraction. Some commercial fishing is done but on a very small scale. The Wellwood Yacht Club and several marinas are busy caring for the many boats docked here.
