Gifted and Talented

Vision:  Cultivating the gifts and talents of students

Mission:  The mission of the Cecil County Public Schools' Gifted and Talented program is to work in collaboration with stakeholders to identify, advocate for, and meet the needs of students who demonstrate characteristics of gifted learners and creative thinkers, as compared to their peers. The program is designed to nurture the gifts and talents of students as they develop the skills necessary for lifelong learning.    Gifted and Talented in Maryland

Philosophy

Cecil County Public Schools is committed to providing rich learning experiences for identified students throughout their PreK-12 education.  We recognize that each student is unique and has his/her own individual abilities, promise, and potential; hence, there is no single gifted student profile. We believe the characteristics of creative thinkers and gifted learners are evident regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, geographic location, primary language, and/or disability.   The Gifted and Talented Program provides services that support a student’s learning needs.  Specifically, Gifted and Talented (GT) teachers at the elementary level work directly with identified students, as well as their own classroom teachers, to implement and plan lessons that challenge students through differentiation of curricula.  Services are provided both in and out of the classroom on a regular basis by both the Gifted and Talented and general education teachers.    Particular attention is paid to extending the depth and complexity of the learning outcomes in developing and adapting units and lessons. The GT Teacher works as an advocate for the academic and effective needs of gifted and talented students and provides services that include independent study, small group instruction, and compacting. Extra-curricular experiences are available and are determined by student needs. In grades 6-8, students are offered accelerated math and English. Beyond grade 8 students are offered Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses within their courses of study.

Definition of Gifted

A gifted student is one who has outstanding talent and performance, or shows potential for performance, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment in areas of gifted learning and/or creative thinking when compared with other students of a similar age, experience, or environment. Gifted students show aptitude (exceptional ability to reason and learn) or competence (documented performance or achievement in top 10% or rarer) in one or more academic domains. *This definition is based on the definitions of giftedness from the Annotated Code of Maryland and the National Association of Gifted Children.
