Social/ Emotional Development Support

 The social/emotional domain is about how a child gets along with others and handles or expresses emotions.  Trust, self-esteem, and self-control are all important parts of this area of growth. For your child to do well in school, he/she should be able to apologize, solve problems, try different things, accept responsibility for the good and bad things he/she does, and not give up too quickly.  Eventually, these will help your child make and keep friends.

 Social/ Emotional Development Activities 

  •  Feelings - an activity for 3-4 year-olds - used to teach a child how to identify and express emotions using the book, “How is Blue Feeling? Bring Your own Crayon” and a box of crayons
  • Tea Time - an activity for 3-4 year-olds - used to help a child make friends and get along with others which uses a tea set.
  • Taking Care of Others - an activity for 3-4 year-olds - used to teach a child empathy and caring toward others using a baby bottle, baby doll, blanket and an infant diaper.
  • How Does It Feel? – an activity for 3-4 year-olds - used to help a child learn good manners and understand the feelings of others using the book “The Grouchy Ladybug" by Eric Carie

  1. Respond quickly to your infant’s cries
  2. Provide opportunities for play
  3. Encourage your child to be independent
  4. Allow your child to make choices
  5. Encourage emotional expression using words
  6. Give clear expectations for behavior
  7. Establish a simple routine
  8. Have rules for how to treat others, safety etc. and help your child to follow them.
  9. Encourage your child to try new things.
