Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program and Secondary ELA Standards
Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards and Assessment Program
The Secondary English Language Arts Curriculum is aligned with the Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards (MCCRS). The standards are grounded in the essential skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening and are aligned with college and career expectations.
Students in grades 6, 7, 8, and 10 will take the English Language Arts and Literacy component of the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP). During the exam, students will read literary and informational passages and demonstrate their reading comprehension through written responses. Beginning in 2022-2023, a student's score on the grade 10 MCAP exam will account for 20% of their grade for English 10. Full implementation of the new MCAP exam will be in the year 2022-2023, but in 2021-2022 students are required to participate in the exam.
